gregory street hotel

townsville, australia

The ten-storey hotel will be located on the corner of Gregory and Mitchell Streets in North Ward, Townsville. The site is in close proximity to The Strand and the 100 key hotel will primarily address Gregory Street. It is expected that Gregory Street will develop into the high street of the precinct over the next few years, and the hotel could be an important contributor to this transformation.

The three-level podium will accommodate the ground-floor hotel lobby and hospitality areas, with Levels 1 and 2 used for car parking. Levels 3 to 9 will comprise the hotel accommodation levels.

The distinct layering of Townsville’s landscape has inspired the dynamic architectural design of the building. This concept of strata is expressed through the horizontal and vertical composition of the building and its overall built form.

The repetitive hotel accommodation levels allow these floors to be constructed using a system of modular units. This stratified arrangement of modules defines the façade articulation and strategically provides recessed balconies on every floor, maximising panoramic views of surrounding natural landmarks, including Castle Hill, Magnetic Island and the Coral Sea.

Through stacking and stratification, the project achieves construction efficiency while expressing a strong connection to its surrounding context.
